Community colleges estimate $500 to $3,864 a year for books and supplies: $500 at St. Philip's College in San Antonio, $2,250 at Houston Community College and $3,864 at Sampson Community College in North Carolina. For whole programs, career schools list anywhere from $0, where tools and books are in the price (CET-San Jose, Southern Technical College), to $4,536 at American Trade School in Missouri.
Tuition gets all the attention, but HVAC students also pay for textbooks, safety gear and a growing set of hand tools and meters. Those costs can add up to more than a year of tuition at some public colleges, and at others they’re folded into the price you already pay.
The figures below are what schools report to NCES as books and supplies. They’re estimates for budgeting, not a shopping list, and no one can tell you what a specific wrench costs from them. What they can tell you is how much room to leave in your budget at each kind of school.
Community College Estimates Range From $500 to $3,864 a Year
Public colleges report a books and supplies estimate for a full-time year, separate from tuition. Here’s how that compares with tuition and fees for a full-time year (2024-25) at colleges in several states.

Two things stand out. First, the spread is wide even inside one state: in Texas, Lamar Institute of Technology lists $2,788 while St. Philip’s College lists $500. Second, at several colleges the books and supplies line is bigger than tuition. At San Jose City College it’s about twice the in-state tuition.
Treat these as a starting point and ask the HVAC department for its own required tool list.
Career Schools and Technical Centers Quote Whole-Program Supplies
Private career schools and adult technical centers usually publish one price for the entire program. NCES lists that price in two parts: tuition and fees, and books and supplies. Here’s what several schools report.

The Ohio adult career centers are worth a close look. Great Oaks in Cincinnati and Ashland County-West Holmes both list books and supplies above $3,400, but their tuition is a fraction of what private schools charge. When Supplies Cost More Than Tuition
At low-tuition public programs, supplies can be the biggest single bill. Orange Technical College-West Campus in Ocoee, Florida, lists $3,119 for books and supplies against $2,552 in tuition and fees for its 750-hour program. Baldwin Park Adult and Community Education in California lists $1,355 for books and supplies and $1,135 for tuition and fees for its 710-hour program.
Among community colleges, Sampson Community College in Clinton, North Carolina, lists $3,864 a year for books and supplies, more than its $2,877 in-state tuition. Montgomery Community College in Troy lists $2,702, just above its $2,538 tuition.
That doesn’t make these programs a bad deal. Their total is still well below a private school’s. It does mean you should budget for supplies before you apply, not after your first week of class. Programs That Include Tools and Books in the Price
Some schools list $0 or a small amount for books and supplies because they build those costs into tuition. That’s not free, but it does mean fewer surprises.
- CET-San Jose, Colton and Coachella (California): books, supplies, tools and uniforms are included. CET-San Jose lists $0 for books and supplies and $15,500 in tuition and fees for its 900-hour program.
- Southern Technical College (Florida): required materials and textbooks come at no extra cost. It lists $0 for books and supplies and $18,900 in tuition and fees for its 10-month diploma.
- Portage Lakes Career Center (Ohio): tuition includes a tool kit and textbooks students keep. It lists $0 for books and supplies and $8,995 in tuition and fees.
- Futura Career Institute (Florida): books and supplies are included in the price.
- New England Tractor Trailer Training School of Massachusetts: each student receives a full set of HVAC tools and test equipment; it lists $750 for books and supplies.
- Onondaga Cortland Madison BOCES (New York): each student gets a tool kit with an electrical meter and a refrigerant gauge manifold; it lists $990 for books and supplies.
- Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center (Pennsylvania): a tool kit with digital gauges and a multimeter is part of program fees; it lists $1,831 for books and supplies.
- Dorsey College (Michigan): tuition includes a basic tool kit and an electronic device.
- Arkansas State University-Beebe: a Metallica Scholars Initiative grant gives every HVACR student on the Searcy campus a professional toolkit with hand, electrical, diagnostic, refrigeration service and sheet-metal tools.

A few schools publish specific numbers that help you plan. Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, Minnesota, includes a $2,700 tool set in its published cost estimate, and it lists $1,200 a year for books and supplies. That tells you a full professional set can be a real line item.
Exam fees are separate from books at most schools. Stark State College in Ohio charges $40 for all four sections of the EPA 608 exam at its testing center.
