How Much Does HVAC School Cost in Ohio?
An adult career center program in Ohio costs $4,680 to $10,716 for the whole program, such as $7,630 at Upper Valley Career Center in Piqua or $8,995 at Portage Lakes Career Center in Uniontown. Community college tuition and fees for a full-time year (2024-25) run from $3,675 at Sinclair in Dayton to $5,870 at Owens in Perrysburg. Private schools such as Fortis College charge $14,440 to $14,935 a year.
Ohio gives you more ways into HVAC than most people expect. Besides community colleges and private schools, it has a wide network of public adult career centers and joint vocational schools. Their adult HVAC programs are priced as one flat fee for a set number of clock hours, and many run at night.

Tier 1: Adult Career Centers, One Price for the Whole Program
Career center HVAC programs are short, hands-on and priced as a package. These are the whole-program tuition and fees NCES lists:

The low books line at some schools isn’t an accident. Portage Lakes Career Center includes a tool kit and textbooks students keep. Its evening program also carries 20 technical credits toward an Associate of Technical Studies at the University of Akron, which is a useful bridge if you later want a degree.
Auburn Career Center includes the EPA Section 608 and OSHA 10-Hour General Industry tests in its 600-hour course. Upper Valley Career Center has another money saver: any of its 36-hour modules can be taken on its own, so you can pay for just the piece you need.
Buckeye Joint Vocational School has the lowest program tuition in this group. Its 600-hour evening program meets Monday through Thursday, 5:00 to 9:30 p.m., from August to May, and adds metal fabrication (sheet metal, brazing, soldering and welding) to HVAC-R service skills.
Watch the books-and-supplies column, though. At Great Oaks in Cincinnati it adds $3,464, which changes the comparison with Portage Lakes considerably.
Tier 2: Community and State Colleges, Priced by the Year
Ohio’s two-year colleges charge by the credit hour. These are tuition and fees for a full-time year in 2024-25:

A one-year college certificate is the closest match to a career center program. Sinclair Community College offers a 30-31 credit HVAC Light Commercial and Residential Service certificate, and Stark State College offers a 31-32 credit one-year certificate plus shorter stackable ones that start at 13 credits.
The college route costs more if you go all the way to an associate degree, which takes four or five semesters. Clark State College lays out its 61-credit associate of technical studies over five semesters including summer, and awards three embedded certificates along the way.
Out-of-state students pay more. Columbus State lists $11,224 and Owens lists $10,502 for students from outside Ohio.
Tier 3: Private Schools, the Highest Yearly Price
Ohio’s private HVAC schools charge a flat rate for all students:

These schools trade price for structure. Ohio Business College runs a nine-month diploma in day or evening sections, with classes starting four times a year. Fortis College in Westerville and its sister campuses offer an HVACR diploma that can be finished in as little as 48 instructional weeks. The University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima holds HVAC Excellence programmatic accreditation, and its students install residential systems with the local Habitat for Humanity.
Cheaper Ways to Start
You don’t have to buy a full program on day one. Several Ohio schools sell HVAC in smaller pieces:
- Apollo Career Center in Lima runs a 144-hour basic HVAC course that meets Monday and Wednesday, 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. The course fee includes the EPA 608 testing fee. The current section runs September 14, 2026 to February 8, 2027.
- Clark State College offers a 2-credit HVAC EPA 608 Short-Term Technical Certificate and a 4-credit HVAC-R Basic Electrical certificate, both of which count toward its associate degree.
- Upper Valley Career Center and C-TEC of Licking County in Newark both let you take individual modules as stand-alone classes.
- Ashtabula County Technical and Career Campus runs a 300-hour HVAC course on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, half the length of its 600-hour Industrial Electricity/HVAC combo.
A short course won’t make you a full technician, but it can get you EPA 608 certified and into a helper job while you decide whether to go further.
Extra Costs to Budget for
Beyond tuition, plan for:
- Certification exams. Stark State’s testing center charges $40 for all four EPA Section 608 sections and $50 for each ICE industry competency exam. Some career centers roll testing into the fee: Apollo Career Center’s basic course fee includes the EPA 608 testing fee.
- Tools. Several career centers include a tool kit, including Portage Lakes, Medina County and Ashtabula County’s evening combo program. Ask before you buy your own.
- Books and supplies. These range from $0 to $3,464 across the programs above.

Which Tier Fits You

Choose a community college if you want college credit you can build into an associate degree later, or you’re interested in commercial systems. Columbus State offers controls, test and balance, and high pressure boiler license training certificates, and Owens lets certificate students specialize in chiller operations, commercial refrigeration, control systems or building energy management.
Choose a private school if you need frequent start dates or a set daily schedule and are willing to pay more for it.
Consider an apprenticeship if you would rather earn while you learn.
