How HVAC programs enter the directory

We start with colleges that report associate-level HVAC programs to the US Department of Education under program code 47.0201. That gives us a consistent way to find programs across states. It doesn't include every short certificate, apprenticeship, private school, or employer training option.

A school appears because it reported a matching program, not because it paid us or earned a recommendation. State pages are alphabetical unless we publish and explain a separate scoring method.

The current national review began with 221 federal candidate records. 172 passed the current official-page and credential checks; 49 remain unpublished as school listings until a current official source supports them.

How we verify a school profile

1. Match the federal institution record to the school's official domain.
2. Locate a current official page for the specific program.
3. Check that the page describes the right field and contains enough program detail to support a profile.
4. Record the page title, URL, retrieval date, and the claims used.
5. Attribute school-controlled facts, such as curriculum and campus, to the school.

We do not turn an old directory URL or a general school homepage into proof that a program is currently offered.

Why a route may exist without being indexed

Visitors can reach all verified-program state, city, and school routes, but route generation does not guarantee search indexation. A state comparison needs at least two verified programs. A city page can still be indexed when it has one verified school if it also provides distinct local labor-market, county, housing, and nearby-city information that helps someone evaluate training in that area.

A school profile must contain enough useful detail from its official program page. We consider the amount of page-specific evidence, distinctive curriculum details, structured program facts, and the depth of the official material reviewed. Multi-campus records cannot create several indexable profiles from the same generic source. Pages that miss those differentiation gates carry noindex,follow and stay out of the XML sitemap until stronger evidence is added.

What every published school fact must carry

Every school listing is tied to a named source, source URL, publisher, review date, source period, and a record of the claims that source supports. Changeable program facts are reviewed at least every 180 days.

A school number also needs its reporting period, population, unit, and field definition. If those details are missing, we leave the number off the page. We do not turn awards into a count of people, present a college-wide graduation rate as an HVAC outcome, or describe an old tuition figure as a current program price.

How we use HVAC wage data

National figures currently use the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release for SOC 49-9021, Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers, May 2025. Each use keeps the occupation, geography, release, and percentile context attached.

OEWS wage estimates are not employment projections. A median is not a promise of starting pay or individual earnings.

How certification and licensing claims are checked

Federal refrigerant-certification claims link to the US Environmental Protection Agency. State and local licensing claims require the relevant current government source. We distinguish Section 608 certification from a state or local trade license.

How affiliate relationships affect the site

You'll see a disclosure before every partner-school form. A school doesn't get into a guide because it pays us, and the matching form may show different schools from the guide. Read the affiliate disclosure for more detail.

How pages are reviewed and corrected

Changeable program claims carry a review date. When newer authoritative evidence contradicts a published fact, we update the page and its review date. Material corrections should change the claim and its supporting source, not only the date. Our build is blocked when required school-source records are missing or stale.

What we mean by unique, useful content

We do not treat a longer rewrite of common HVAC facts as original value. Each search page must own a distinct visitor decision and add a tool, calculation, evidence table, structured comparison, or decision framework made for that decision. The page must also explain the limits of its evidence and what the visitor should verify next.

School profiles follow a stricter rule: interpretation can only come from locked official sources. When a public source does not establish tuition, lab hours, schedule, exam inclusion, outcomes, or current availability, the profile keeps that point unresolved and turns it into a question for the school.
