The credential you pick sets the clock. Credit programs are usually measured in semesters, and technical centers and career schools in clock hours or weeks.

Evening and Weekend HVAC Classes: 200 Programs

Working adults can train at night at South Florida Institute of Technology, Northwestern Technological Institute, Delta Technical College-Mississippi, Lincoln Technical Institute-Union, Atlanta Technical College, Southern Careers Institute-San Antonio and 194 other programs we verified. 23 list weekend classes, and 107 put some coursework online. Full Time, Part Time and Fast-Track Options

Community colleges let you set the pace by how many credits you take each term, and several build schedules around working students. Wake Technical Community College runs a fast-track daytime associate degree that meets two days a week so students can work in the trade. Oakland Community College says part-time students can finish a certificate in four semesters. Henry Ford College runs three consecutive 15-week semesters with class times adjusted to apprentices' work shifts. At career schools the schedule is fixed per section, so pick the section before you compare lengths: Fortis College in Mobile, AL runs its 48-week diploma in morning or evening sections four days a week.

Start dates change the real timeline more than people expect. A program that admits once a year can add months before your first class:

How Long an HVAC Apprenticeship Takes

An apprenticeship runs longer than school because you work full time while you learn. Federal standards call for at least 2,000 hours of on-the-job learning in a time-based program and recommend 144 hours of classroom instruction a year (29 CFR 29.5). Programs schools run or teach for show the range:

• Flagler Technical College: a three-year registered apprenticeship for people already working for a sponsor.
• Polytech Adult Education: four years of classroom training alongside 8,000 hours on the job.
• Apollo Career Center: 604 classroom hours with 8,000 hours of on-the-job training.
• Foothill College: five-year union apprenticeships.

School first can shorten it: Gordon Cooper Technology Center counts its 1,050-hour program as two years toward Oklahoma's three-year apprenticeship. See HVAC apprenticeship.

Time After School: EPA 608 and Licensing

Many programs schedule the EPA 608 exam before graduation, so you can handle refrigerant from your first day on the job; 448 name 608 preparation or testing. Licensing adds time where it applies, because most licenses need documented experience on top of school. Texas asks for 24 months of supervised work for its voluntary Certified Technician credential. College of Eastern Idaho says its 576 hours of schooling plus 8,000 hours of work qualify an apprentice for the Idaho HVAC journeyman exam, and Somerset Community College lists two years of education plus 1,500 apprentice hours for the Kentucky journeyman license.
