How Long an HVAC Apprenticeship Takes

BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook says HVAC apprenticeships usually last several years. Programs colleges teach for run three to five:

Flagler Technical College: three years, for people already working for a sponsor.
Wor-Wic Community College: four years with the Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors of Maryland, classes two evenings a week.
Polytech Adult Education: four years of classes and 8,000 hours of on-the-job training.

How to Find an HVAC Apprenticeship

You apply to the sponsor, not to a school. Sponsors open applications on their own schedule, often with an aptitude test and interview. Four places to look:

Apprenticeship.gov: the Department of Labor's job finder lists registered openings by location (Apprenticeship.gov).
Union training centers: the United Association (plumbers, pipefitters and service technicians) and sheet metal workers' locals run HVAC apprenticeships in many cities.
Contractor associations: Hillsborough Community College teaches for ABC Florida Gulf Coast, and Santa Fe College for the Builders Association of North Central Florida.
Contractors directly: Cape Fear Community College runs apprenticeships with four named Wilmington-area contractors, and many companies sponsor apprentices without advertising.

Union and Contractor-Sponsored Apprenticeships

HVAC apprenticeships come from two main kinds of sponsor. Union programs run through a local's training center: Foothill College teaches for UA Local 467 and Sheet Metal Local 104, and Cuyahoga Community College District's certificate is open only to registered sheet metal apprentices the union has admitted. Contractor programs run through employer groups or single companies: Hillsborough Community College teaches for ABC Florida Gulf Coast, and Laramie County Community College works with named Cheyenne sponsor employers. Century College places students with both union and non-union employers. Either way you are an employee, and your pay rises as you complete each stage.

From Apprentice to Journeyman License

EPA 608 During an Apprenticeship

You can work on refrigerant circuits before you are certified, but only as a registered apprentice closely and continually supervised by a certified technician, and only for two years from when you first register (40 CFR 82.152).
