What Jobs Can You Get With HVAC Training?

  • Installer: sets equipment, ductwork and line sets on new installs and replacements.
  • Service technician: diagnoses and repairs heating, cooling and heat pump systems, usually after some installation experience.
  • Commercial and refrigeration technician: rooftop units, chillers, walk-in coolers and supermarket refrigeration.
  • Controls and building automation: programs and troubleshoots building control systems; 437 verified programs list controls in their coursework.

HVAC Career Pay: $40,050 to $95,210

BLS reports all HVAC mechanics and installers together (SOC 49-9021): a median of $61,010, a 10th percentile of $40,050 and a 90th percentile of $95,210 (BLS OEWS, May 2025). The spread reflects experience and specialty. See salary by state.

Training for Each Path

Residential service needs refrigeration, electrical and heating fundamentals plus EPA 608. Commercial and refrigeration work adds larger systems: 412 programs we verified teach commercial systems. Heat pumps are increasingly central: 345 programs name heat pumps or geothermal systems. An associate degree (offered by 318 programs) is the usual path toward controls and supervisory roles.
